Is Vercel free for commercial use? No, Hobby is for personal use

Sources checked

No. Vercel's Hobby plan costs nothing, but Vercel's fair use guidelines restrict it to non-commercial, personal use. Any commercial use needs the Pro plan or Enterprise, and Pro costs $20 a month for each developer seat.

Why it matters

Vercel defines commercial use broadly. It counts any deployment used for the financial gain of anyone involved in any part of making the project, including a paid employee or a consultant who writes the code. Its examples include any way of requesting or processing payment from visitors, advertising a product or service for sale, being paid to create, update or host the site, a site whose main purpose is affiliate links, and showing ads such as Google AdSense. Asking for donations does not count.

So the plan that works while you build can become the wrong plan on the day you add a checkout, a pricing page or an ad. It is easy to miss, because the app keeps working when it happens. The fix is a plan change before your first customer pays, and the app itself stays as it is.

Pro also changes how usage works. Hobby includes set monthly amounts, such as 100 GB of fast data transfer and 1,000,000 function invocations, and when you go over a limit you usually wait until 30 days have passed before you can use that feature again. Pro bills usage beyond what it includes and lets you set spending controls.

Who it applies to

It applies to any web app on a Vercel Hobby account that sells something, shows ads, or was built by someone paid to build it. A personal portfolio, a hobby project or a site that only asks for donations can stay on Hobby. If you are unsure, Vercel asks you to contact its support team.

Other hosts set their own terms, so read the plan terms of whichever host you use before your first sale.

Common questions

Does a donation button make my site commercial?

No. Vercel's guidelines say that asking for donations does not count as commercial use.

Does an app with ads count as commercial?

Yes. Vercel lists advertisements, including platforms like Google AdSense, as commercial use, even when the app itself costs nothing.

What does Vercel Pro cost?

Vercel charges $20 a month per developer seat for Pro, plus usage beyond what the plan includes. Viewer seats cost nothing.

Where launchpad comes in

launchpad's dashboard lists Vercel's Pro plan among each web app's costs, as the plan to move to once the app takes money.
